About Me

Name of Business: Sugar Beets Bakery
Industry: Vegan and Gluten Free Baked Goods
What I Do:
Owner; Bake, Package, Deliver, Accounting, Marketing
More About Me:
I am a divorced, single mother. Balancing income with no alimony or child support. My health was a really big issue and took a turn for the worse during my divorce. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Through self education and support groups, I learned to make the best of my disease. I created this bakery about a year ago. I have grown so much within that year. My accounts are increasing, my material costs have gone down, and we really need to obtain capital to expand. It is the only way for my company to survive. I am hoping through the SOHO loan program, we can obtain support, potential loan opportunities, and additional growth.

Here is my complete story:
I battled for years with severe stomach distress, weight gain, asthma, eczema, and depression. There were days that getting out of bed was a chore. I hated living this way and just accepted the consistent misdiagnosis from my doctors. It was not until three years ago, I met a wonderful woman who was part of a Celiac Organization. She suggested I get tested. My results came back positive. I finally felt like there was hope. I did not have to live like this for the rest of my life.
The first step was changing my daily diet. I was 140lbs overweight. How was I going to do this? I loved eating pasta, breads, crackers, and most of all pastries. I started researching more about the disease and the choices that were available. I became obsessed with food and the different nutrients it provided. Food should be looked at as a source of energy. It enters our body to help do just about anything all day long. Having Celiac was actually a blessing. It led me to open my eyes of another way to live.
I began to visit health food stores, seminars, obtained a library of books on celiac, raw, vegan, and vegetarian diets. All the sources pointed to the same answer. Live longer by eating food in its purest form, real, Whole Food. It was not rocket science. I knew that processed foods were horrible for me. It was not until my research did I realize just how bad they were. I think it has taken three years to completely flush the enormous amount of ding dongs consumed as a kid out of my system.

It has been over five years, 140lbs. lighter, and a high vegan/raw food diet that brought me to the development of “Sugar Beets Bakery”. I wanted to create a delicious baking line for people who were battling the same disease as me.
So why did I choose Beets? Beets are low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol, and Sodium. They are high in Fiber, Folate, Potassium, Manganese, Vitamin C, Iron, and Magnesium. They aid in maintaining proper health and assist with weight loss. They add density and sweetness to my line of Organic Cakes, Cookies, Donuts, Cupcakes, Cobblers, Muffins and Brownies. In addition to the nutrients from beets, our baked goods are made with organic fruits, high protein nuts, raw antioxidant chocolate, organic vegetables, no artificial flavors or preservatives added, and fiber rich flours. These desserts won’t blow your healthy eating habits or leave you feeling super guilty.
